The first year Online Clinical Practicum is open to Berkeley Herbal Center students who have completed either the Apprenticeship program or the Foundations & Therapeutics programs. We will also consider students who have graduated from similar programs at other herb schools.
In this 45 week , 300 hour program, we will practice the art of the clinical herbalist. By the end of the year, you will feel confident seeing clients, researching and writing SOAP notes, formulating for clients and coming up with Plans of Care. You will learn to work on online platforms like Jane App, Dispensary Tree, and Full Script. And you will build up your clinician muscle through practice, practice, practice.
This is a space to explore putting your herbal education into practice, with supervised practice in working with clients online. In this program you will continue your herbal education and learn from fellow clinicians through seeing clients together and participating in roundtable case review. All hours from this internship count towards both education hours and clinic hours to become a Registered Herbalist (RH) with the American Herbalist Guild (AHG). When the year is over, you will have the option of continuing on to Year Two of the Clinical Internship Program.
Each week will include a lecture on topics important in clinical practice, time to see clients and time to review and discuss those consultations as a group. There will also be an hour of open question time per week. Each month, you will have a personal 45 minute mentor session. You will also receive a supply of single herb tinctures to work with monthly at home, continuing your personal herb relationship process.
There is an estimated 3 to 5 hours of homework per week, writing and researching SOAP notes, Plans of Care, communicating with clients, and an occasional reading.
By the end of the year, each clinician will also teach a one hour class to the group on a topic of your choosing, and choose 2 of the following:
- Write an Intake Form and Client Information Form for your practice
- Prepare a SOAP note in AHG RH submission style
- Train with a local free clinic/street medic group/etc.
- Write an in-depth monograph on a plant that you get to know throughout the year
- Teach a community class (in person or online)
- Host an herb related event (in person or online)
- Host a tea tasting (in person or online)
- Host a Plant Walk
- Make a website for your practice
- Write a budget for your practice
- Write a story or make art about your herbal relationship
